I grew up on a ranch in Kansas. Neighbors were a mile or more away.
Wives met their future husbands at barn dances and other "social events" hosted by the community. Men who were bad news were screened out at these events; the guys women met were the type of guys their parents approved of (because their parents and grandparents were present).
