That was most certainly an expression of envy. I noticed it too!

Reminds me of when my ex-girlfriend would call me late at night during the working week (when
I could never see her); we would only meet on weekends. Sometimes the couple above - a guy with
his current girlfriend - would be having sex while we were on the phone. My girlfriend would tell me
that she could hear the woman's moans through the ceiling, which obviously made her envious. She
must've been thinking: 'these two are getting it on on a Wednesday and the only contact I've got with my
boyfriend is through a phone'. Sometimes she would even loudly mimic the woman's sounds during our
phone call, and I would have to tell her to keep her voice down in case the couple overheard her. She
was kind of crazy.
