First, the sound quality seems fine so far. Again, we aren't talking about trying to record a concert out on the open here. We're often talking about recording loud sex that you can hear in a hallway of a motel or something. That's a bit different than the equipment you seem to be recommending that costs big money.

Second, we're also often talking about setting these down and walking away from it with the HOPE that it is there when you return. Sorry, but I can't afford to spend crazy money on recorders that I'm going to abandon basically. I spend like US$15 on these. I can afford that.

Third, these LOOK like nothing more than a USB stick that someone accidentally left behind. What you suggest looks like exactly what it is: a voice recorder. I don't want that.

Finally, just to note it, the page that you just linked to sells the EXACT SAME USB RECORDER that I am talking about in this thread. They sell it for EUR111 (US$149). I paid US$12 for it. Again, the EXACT same thing. Just because they label it as "professional surveillance stuff" doesn't make it such.

The assumption that recording quality goes up significantly when you throw more money at it is often a bad assumption.

Agreed -- all depends on the circumstances.

And, as I said, the place you linked to sells the EXACT same device that I use -- only they sell it for over 10x more than I paid. Seems like they are just marking stuff up and calling it better based on price...

Just as an update/followup... Last night I wanted to test how long the battery would last in the USB recorder, so I just let it go all night. This morning it had been recording for 13 hours and 47 minutes and was still going when I accidentally stopped it (because I assumed it had already ran out of battery and stopped on it's own).

I'll do another test soon to see what the maximum is -- but impressed so far that it recorded for almost 14 hours!

I just bought two of these 8GB recorders on amazon.co.uk. They have KooPower written on them and they were dirt cheap. I got them from a company called letpower. The difference between them is huge. One is crap - lots of hiss and very low volume. The other is really pretty good. The moral of the story is to buy a couple. You can always use one as a memory stick if it's faulty
