I actually disable sound activation...the sony recorder can last around 20 hours on one AA constantly recording. The files end up in 2GB chunks but Adobe Audition helps narrow the focus pretty quickly

I can only recommend to avoid sound activation... the idea sounds nice but in a real world it is not at all suitable for our kind of recordings... my very first recordings were destroyed because I had my device in the wrong mode without being aware of it...

Yes, I can attest. If a Mic isn't sensitive enough it can completely destroy a recording.
Worst of all it removes the authenticity.
