Try export for saving. One of the quirks of the program. It wants to save projects. If you want to save a sound file, use export under the file menu.

You’re absolutely right about that, Mr. P. I often leave USBs in place for 10 - 12 hours in order to get just a few minutes of good quality recording. Audacity is a pretty much essential tool for editing these long files and extracting the interesting segments.

BTW, Audacity is not the only sound editor you can use, nor is it probably the best for any given task. It is however, free, and available on many computer platforms, and while perhaps not the best at everything, it is certainly serviceable.
