[First]Hour and a half of data but can't get rid of noise

I was able to get a nice find of my neighbors the other night, and so far I have succeeded in getting a large part of the noise out. However, they still sound overtaken by the static and traffic. The traffic I can deal with, even though it's a pretty busy road and (I think) covers his climax. The main action happens from about 5:00 to at least 60:00, I believe. For some reason, when I use Audacity it sometimes grays out everything - I can't edit the file at all and can't amplify it or attempt to reduce the noise anymore. The most annoying thing is that kind of wavey squiggly noise after the first noise reduction, and I can't seem to figure out how to get rid of that if it's even possible, although I did manage to make it much more silent it still covers the rest of the audio. If anyone is interested in giving it a try to clean it up, leave a message and I'll try to get the file to you. It's not uploading in the post/upload very slow since it's 0.97GB. :\

Yeah, noise reduction is a dark art. I've not had much luck with Audacity personally for anything more than really light reduction on quite a straight forward source. In my experience, RX from iZotope blows pretty much everything else away, but even then, I'm not a big fan of the sound you get left with after extreme amounts of noise reduction.

Would be happy to take a look at it if you're stuck. With a file that big, probably best to upload it to Dropbox or something similar and shoot a link over via PM if you're interested.

Good luck man!

I'll give RX a try.

I uploaded it, but can't find the PM button on your profile. Can't compose a new message in the user control panel either, it just opens a blank page that says no messages. Here is the link to the dropbox, though.

@thefap: you canĀ“t send pm as newly registered member but you lost that status and became a full member with your second posting.

Audacity seems to be geared more for altering recordings to make them sound like they came from a different kind of source than cleaning up artifacts. I have spent hours playing around with it, and can get reasonable results (it's freeware, so I can't expect too much). I have Audacity 2.0.2, and have started using the isolate as well as the remove feature of the built-in noise reduction. I am now trying very light removal/enhancement levels and applying them multiple times with a little better success. I have also used the equalization feature to enhance or isolate vocals, then mix that track with the normal inverted track. The result is very clean, but the frequency range very narrow, like you're listening through a tube.

Well, if you want to upload what you have I could see what else I could throw at it.

I think people's expectations for noise reduction results have been inflated by Hollywood movies and TV where they miraculously pick out a sound and 'enhance'. The reality is that it's near impossible if the recording is not clean.
