How do I compose a personal message to a specific member? Every time I try it wouldn't let me....

Well, you still have the status "newly registered member". This means that your first two messages have to be moderated and you can´t send personal messages. So just one more message to write ...

I have been a member for years. Is the reason I'm classified as a newly registered member, because I haven't been active enough?

Everybody is classified as a newly registered member until he/she posted 2 messages. These first 2 messages have to be moderated and you can´t send personal messages before that to prevent spammers annoying us. Now that your second message has been allowed, you should be able to send pm.
