New plug in discovery for Audacity

This has probably been around for a while, but I just pondered trying it...

I was using a compressor on a file but it had occasional bursts of loud noise that would crank the gain way down and the release was not as fast as I would have liked. That is the gain did not return for a few seconds after the loud sound ceased. Pooie.

Than I got to thinking I don't really need to tame the loud sounds as much as I need to bring up the softer ones. I found a plug in for a fast lookahead limiter for Audacity. Crank the time constant all the way down and the gain all the way up, and vola. It will limit the really loud stuff so it does not clip and sound awful, but it will bring up the quiet stuff out of the background.

I ran it through a high pass filter first with a cut off of about 125Hz and 48 db/octave to get rid of the rumble, than through the fast look ahead limiter.

Give it a shot...

Hi. Thanks! At first I didn't know where to download. I guess it's about Fast Lookahead Limiter 1913
by Steve Harris? It's included in Audacity LADSPA plugins: http://www.fosshub.com/Audacity.html

Also it can be downloaded separately at:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia ... ter-.shtml
It's exactly same file and size inside the ZIP, fast_lookahead_limiter_1913.dll - 104 kB

Interesting
