If you have a file bigger than 32mb (limit for single attachment in this forum), you can choose to split the files to smaller archives. These files will be rejoined automatically when downloaded and unpacked. The tool I recommend for splitting files is 7zip and here is the short description how to split the files in equal parts:

1. right click on big file(s)
2. choose "add to an archiv"
3. you will see this (german language but you will find everything in place):
7zip1.jpg
4. choose the file size (see arrow, I chose 30M), click ok
5. wait a few seconds and you´re done
6. the result will look like this:
7zip2.jpg
Did that help?

You will find several "how-to-unpack-tutorials" written by audio or me here and here and ...

The 7zip website I linked to answers your first 2 questions - it is free as in OpenSource and there doesn´t seem to be a version for mac. 3rd answer: I don´t have a clue which software is best for mac, sorry. Anybody?

Keka is a file archiver for Mac that supports 7zip. I haven't used it, though. It's free and open source. A link appears at the bottom of the main 7zip page, under the heading "Some unofficial p7zip packages."
