So I planted my mics last night right here. Can't check Audacity until tonight. But...I found something here that wasn't here before!

Sorry folks -

I learned a lesson on this one - don't open a post until actual files are in hand. My morning discovery made me overconfident. Thought I was going to have some loud clear action. I spent hours scouring the entire 13 hrs of data and found that this happened early on - car engine running; windows up, LOTS of background noise so the sounds were pretty much unidentifiable.
Respect to all here who do outdoor and audacity - it is 100X more difficult to pick sounds out of outdoor files than hotel corridor plants! I'll leave it to the professionals from now on.

Again - sorry for the premature post and for wasting people's time and space here on this.

As penance, I booked into my place here downtown - only two rooms were active last night but boy did I get some good stuff - go over to Motel Sex..

Thanks Physicist - I felt like I gave people a false post here - though I didn't intend to. I could understand people getting really annoyed by the buildup I gave it and then nothing at the end.

Years ago, a reporter in the USA, Geraldo Rivera, made a production of opening a recently discovered secret vault of Al Capone (famous Chicago crime boss in the 1930's). For 3 hours, he had over 1/2 of the country glued to the TV to watch - with interviews by various historians anticipating what they would find inside. When they finally opened it, all they found was a rusty hammer and deteriorated chair - rest of the room was completely bare. You can imagine the reaction.

Felt I kind of did the same to everyone here.

Really thought though that there would be some great sounds on this. I mean I would have posted if there was one condom - but TWO? Really thought it was going to be something like a double date or if it was a single couple that I would find an hour or two of them going at it twice. I was unpleasantly surprised at the outcome. I went over that stupid 13 hour recording 3 times before finally realizing I had nothing to show..

Don't worry Gekko it's not exactly an exact science we do here! I'm sure there'll be others in future and let's face it, you more than made up for it in motels

Don't worry about it. We are all just grateful for any captures from anyone?! We appreciate anyone who goes to the effort in recording these sounds! Look forward to future recordings. ;-)

Head on over to my new post 'infidelity point' for some hi fidelity lunchtime car action, not easy capturing outside here's a few pointers, some you will have access to others depend on the capabilities of your recorder. We have serveral common issues encountered outdoors, wind, rain, birds, other animals and engine noise either close or distant.

Recorder settings:

if you have a bass cut sometimes called low cut filter switch it on, even with hi gain recording a normal car will need to be within a coupe of hundred feet in open space or 100 feet in a more sheltered environment like a forest before it is audiable on your recording.

If you have the option of hi gain use it.

Dont use voice activation get good batteries and memory my olympus gives me 45hrs of studio quality stereo recording running on 2x aaa 900mah batteries.

Environment and Placement:

Put your recorder in a bag, i tend to look for a rock, made a lil hollow underneath to accomodate the recorder, cover with the rock, check non of the plastic bag is visable, this will cut out a huge amount of wind and rain noise, if you can get a rock in a sheltered area such as under a bush even better, where ever you go there will be critters crawlin over your device in the night, rodents, rabbits etc, this noise is slightly mitigated by hiding the recorder under a rock.

Is it cold and wet today? if the answer is yes the chances are windows will be up and engine running, choose your time, visit often and look at the litter, work out the pattern of your subjects visits.

If you use high gain and low cut settings you should be able to see on the audacity waveform when a car arrives and leaves, my files are 45hrs each on average, no way i can listen to every minute of them, learn how individual sounds look in a waveform format on a pc.

If you have a forcast of a week of gales and rain the best you will get is a couple of bumps n squeaks of a car suspension, i dont even bother deploying now when i know the weather will be such that background noise will drown out anything else.
