Try an iphone or a handheld one like olympus if you could afford it and it is safe. A nice sony recorder for $40 would do nicely too.

You really need a good recorder for these recordings, you are missing out and doing yourself a great disservice by not having preserving them for the future. You might end up regretting it. :p

true that..you need a good recorder..else it will be like driven to the brink or it but not be able to climax due to fuzzy sound distortions

some suggestions for recorders:

USB stick from amazon – 12 hours continuous. Cost say 10£. – you should get a couple of these so you always have them fully charged and on rotation should the need arise. very convenient for a drop and you avoid standing around with the risk of being seen. start with a couple of these and you may as well look into a more expensive device at the same time too - eg the sony ones mentionned above.

Basically doing this means you massively reduce the risk of getting caught or accidentally disturbing them. Indeed, you could say to him you are going out for a few hours and then they can be loud without ever being concerned about being heard……

I also recently purchased this pen recorder. Cost is 50£ but amazon is doing a 50% sale atm. Very discreet. Something you can actually keep out in the open without fear of discovery. Like in a hotel room with a loud nextdoor couple during the day but without having the risk of housekeeping accidentally discovering a USB stick.

Finally give some thought too as to where you might put your recorder. Where are you recording from atm? Does he keep the window open for outside recordings. Perhaps hidden in the room itself so when he goes out in the early evening, you can nip in there and retrieve it in the morning (in a plant or in a drawer for example). Gekko also has good tips on covering it with masking tape and even double sided sticky tape btw.
