I haven’t contributed anything here for a long time and apologise for that. There were a number of reasons for this, one being that I nearly got caught and lost some expensive gear. Another being that despite repeated attempts over two years I didn’t manage to capture anything. Another was the fact that I found it much easier to capture candid/voyeur video, so started to contribute to another forum that specialised in the visual and stopped trying to grab sound stuff.

I no longer bother with the video stuff, so have started to try and capture sound again and am amazed I have recently had a modest success with a young neighbour who is visited by a girlfriend. It’s only about three mins from a 15 hour recording, but it’s a start and I will get round to posting it soon. I hope to capture more while it’s hot and his windows are wide open, so in the last week I have been pretty much doing 24/7 recording, but only have the one snippet so far.

Going back to the topic of contributing, the other day I found a folder called audio and inside are some sound files dating back as far as the late 80s. In view of the fact that they were recorded then, the quality isn’t too bad for some of them. I intend to get them cleaned up and it might turn out to be a big help that Audition has improved a lot since then. In fact it wasn’t even Audition then, it was a quirky sound editor called “Cool Edit Pro” that Adobe later purchased.

Did mic even exist in the 80s?

Now this is something i cant wait to hear.

I remember cool edit pro. I used it to clean up a some albums that never came out on CD. It was a good tool.

The equipment I lost a few years ago was an expensive mini-disc recorder that used the 1GB versions and a Sony mic that cost around £100. Worse than that though, was that the recorder had my voice on it and had already captured a great sex session from a couple in a caravan (forever lost). I was also very worried that there could be a 'knock' on the door. Message is, don't imbibe wine and get casual when trying to capture sounds.

As for mics in the 80s, they did exist, along with running water and PCs with what was then a massive 8MBs of RAM (or maybe that was the 70s?) The rock and roll standard mic was the Shure SM80 (an update on the famous SM70) but no good for this work.

I used a great little Sony Walkman recorder at the time and have in the distant past posted at least one capture from that (few gasps from two German lesbians in a tent). Obvious problem was the 45 mins recording time from a cassette. I had actually forgotten that until I found the old recordings and wondered why they stopped at that.

On the subject of technology, it seems a bit of a pity that sound hasn't moved at the pace of visual. When I was capturing candid/voyeur video I had a cam that cost around £200 with an optical zoom that was 1200mm in the old 35mm equivalent. Recording from a distance was pretty easy. Wouldn't it be good if a reasonably priced mic could do that?

Fond memories. I remember that the guys who developed it also created sounds designed to give you a sort of mini-high (memory is blurry here). Not that they actually worked, but nice idea.
