Hi All,

Firstly an apology, I promised some captures on return from my holiday, unfortunatly i returned to a PC with 2x dead hard drives from a storm, trying in vain to recover as much as i can but progress is slow, had 2 years of captures on that drive not to mention 20 years of photos, I'm not a happy bunny!

Went to recover the recorder just after midnight last night it was out for 48hrs and due to come home for a charge, seconds after i arrived, before i got to the recorder i saw the flash of lights coming round the mountain so ran for some cover, they parked right next to the recorder, with the car side on to me about 50feet away, no messing around they jumped straight in the back, she jumped on him and the light went off... So they get at it pretty quick it's in 3 main sections of physical exhersion over 1 and a quater hours, in the first part you hear them get out of the car she says " ne dobra idea" - this is not a good idea, light goes on by this time she is bent into the front of the car with him outside from behind, i get 2 mins of seeing her face as shes getting fucked from behind, then she gets paranoid, back to the back seat and light off for sessions 2 and 3.

She was about 5' - 5.3, skinny with long curly hair and a sweet voice, he was your average lookin young guy around 20, pimped up small car with a stereo worth more than the entire car.

Other 48 hrs was fruitless, experiencing 40C+ temperatures at the moment seems to be discouraging any daytime action, although deep in the forest the actual parking spot is very exposed with no shade, just sitting there in the afternoon heat would be uncomfortable never mind adding physical exercise!

I mean I know I would. Its amazing how you can convince people just by changing the circumstances around them :p

Just got home from there, recorder is out again arrived at 23:00 just after i got there a really hopefull couple, but after smokin a joint she was just giggly, danced a lil in the headlights, no action, last nights couple passed mis way thru, and didnt stop, i was too close to the other guys to risk moving and being heard to find where they parked up.

Mrs now works till 1am, i can get awaw with more time out at night hopefully more action with descriptions coming soon!

I am sorry to hear of our data loss. For your "crown jewels" you might want to look into a web based system. You can sash up to 15GB in a google account and that is safe from local disaster but you will have to write some plumbing to get your data there. You can get s free 2GB account at Mozy, which is totally automated. You can also use outboard USB and or SATA drives, but they are typically in the same physical location as the rest of your computer stuff, so a power surge will take them if they are plugged in and a fire/flood can take them even if they are off line. I really like cloud based backup.

One thought we may want to bring up with Yeppie, and that would be giving contributors to the form lifetime access to their files in the archives. That would encourage people to upload them if for no other reason than once they are uploaded, they are safely backed up!

Ok, so a full run down on the data loss situation...

Around 6 months ago I had a 3.5TB drive that started to get grumpy and start unmounting and failing smart tests etc, I have many spare drives but the biggest is 500Gb, I quickly started copying over data from the big drive until at about 75% it died totally - does not even spin up with power. The latest incident was a storm that took out 2HDD's, PSU and mainboard, true to bulgarian lax standards in rural locations, my incoming main power suppy is just nailed to trees for 500yrds from where it breaks out of the pole to the house, one of the trees took a direct lightning strike.

As you probably read before I'm an audio professional, i dont record at 44khz cd quality i use 96khz and above studio quality, resulting in much bigger files, my audio captues folder was origionally just over 900Gb, this is now spreadover many of the small drives, some recordings lost forever. Cloud based solutions just wont cut it for me i need to invest in the new hardware but prob on a raid mirror.

Quick run down on my basic file sizes:

48hr olympus recording on highest quality - 4gb MP3
Decoding MP3 to raw wav in wavelab requires 13gb/24hr recording of temp space so for full 48hrs 30gb free temp space is a sensible overhead. Decoded to full quality 48hrs long is impossible to play even with 8Gb ram.
Then comes wavelabs auto split function that i have preset to 4hrs, this saves a wav file for each 4hr segment, each wav is 2.43 gb so a 48hr set is 30Gb, this then allows me to use the waveform view to see arriaval and departures and i can then review the full 48hrs in around 30mins.
I generally review a set at least twice before declaring it hit free and data cleaning. I keep only full quality wavs of confirmed captures, anything that passes editorial review for release here is chopped up and converted to mp3 in segments that meet the upload limit.
Process above takes around 40mins but working at max quality bring us the definition we all love

Part #1 starts with the arrival of a noisy diesel(?) sedan. The business hots up towards the centre of the recording, with some nice yelps towards the end. The cricket keeps up a uniform chirp the whole time.
Part #2 needs to be listened to closely, to pick up the occasional moan and what sounds like a slap or two. The cricket keeps right on chirping. Good effort under difficult conditions.
