Can anyone recommend a m4a to mp3 file converter?

Hi,
For some time I have struggled to find a reliable free file converter. All of the ones I've tried either expire after 30 days or keep blasting me with pop-ups. I've finally decided it's time to brush the dust off my credit card and actually pay for one.
Any recommendations?

What do you want it to run on? Windows or Android or Mac?

I am inherently lazy and a bit weary of the "free" stuff that puts spam/unwanted files on your computer so usually do the 'online' route. This one usually works for me on most files:

If it is only m4a to mp3 conversion you could just use VLC for that and it's completely free.
You can use CTRL+R or check "File - Convert/Save" to open the first window.
Just add the m4a and choose the convert option, afterwards "Audio MP3 File".
The first time you will need to download an mp3 codec, which VLC will provide you if you don't have one yet.
Hope this helps!

I'm still using foobar2000 (can be downloaded here:
https://www.foobar2000.org/) which has an included conversion functionality. You just have to additionally have the LAME MP3 Encoder as usual (can be downloaded here:
http://www.rarewares.org/mp3-lame-bundle.php).
Both are free.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll do some experimenting and see which of these works best for me. I'm using Windows and Audacity for editing, with recordings made by low-cost mp3 USB recorders. Occasionally I record using iPhone or iPad.

You can use Audacity to do the conversion. In Audacity use the export function. You might also want to look into Audacity chains. They are designed for processing batches of files.

The problem with mp3 file format is that it loses most of qualities due to the compression. What's wrong with just uploading m4a, WAV, FLAC and other audio formats? Most devices nowadays are able to play them with no problem. VLC, PotPlayer and most modern players for PC can play all of them.

We do accept other formats on the board here, but due to upload file size restrictions sometimes it is just easier to convert them to MP3 for the compression. Plus if the file is still too large there are many more tools for splitting MP3s than for other format types.
