My upstairs neighbors are loud, yet I cant pick them up on any recorder. Bought a new zoom recorder and I put inside the smoke alarm and when I increase the volume in audacity, I can hear some moans. Someone better then me can try maybe?

I tried but there isnt really anything to listen to. Sorry mate. It would help if you told us what to look for.

I have work on the file to extract something from the background but can only hear cracking noise. Here is the file if you hear anything .

I gave it a go. Though I have to agree with the other posts, there's nothing there. Maybe something around the 7 min mark in my version but it's probably just a resonance in the mic due to slight movement.
Anyway, for reference I:
-edited out the loud noise at the top/middle/out due to the placing/moving/removing of the recorder.
-De-hummed @60hz +harmonics
-cut some high end
-added gain

If they are loud but you cannot pick it up from your location you could consider running to their door

Thanks everyone for trying! This was caught when they were less active, I will try getting better recording tonight if they are active.

have you tried putting the recorder under the door or least near where the sound is coming from?

I tried using Audition that has a great algorithm based N.R. tool and I couldn't hear any hints of sex. Sorry!

Still working out best place to put it. this recording I got today from the same spot. I edited this heavily to get the noise floor our and seems like it worked but not great results. I can hear music for sure not sure about much else. have a listen:

Can you provide the raw file. It looks more like a carrousel due to your denoising. I can have a try.

Have you try somewhere else with common structure like water pipe, ventilation and sometime the window frame give better results

Here is the one I got from the bathroom vent fan. I put the recorder inside the vent facing their room. You can hear a lot of thumping, but no moans. My apartments are newly built and pretty good sound proofing it seems like it. The thumping is a lot louder in person and I know for sure it's sex and not just walking around. Still can't find a good spot to record though where I can actually pick up their sounds. (there are some parts where my roomate can be heard in his drunk sleep lol, it is not them)

I have tried to edit your recording but didn t get much success. It would help if you indicate at which time you hear a loud moan.
