Mics capsule test

Post by Take »

Hi SSL,

I bought some microphone capsules to improve the quality of the recordings from my Olympus handheld recorder.
After reading forums about recording ambient sounds, I found interesting that the capsule EM272 from the brand Primo was overall the most rated capsule to record ambient sounds because of it's sensitivity, so I picked 2 of them to give it a try. (they are a bit expensive)

With only one model, I couldn't give a good test to compare, so I bought another capsule from other brand with a bit less sensitivity but that should do a good job based on it's specs. This one cost less than 2€.

And the last capsule I've got, are 2 really tiny. This is the cheapest capsule from the 3 presented in this test.

The test was done with the same song, same volume and mics placed in the same position (behind the door). The results are a bit surprising, as the tiny ones behave really well to record voice and most of the frecuencies, but it gets a bit congested when some bass comes in or other hard sounds are recorded.

The medium model behave a bit flat compared with the others. The spectrum on audacity is closer to the default mic from the Olympus. Quality-wise I would say is a bit cleaner than the Olympus, and of course a bit more volume. For 2€ is really a nive upgrade for your handheld or usb set ups. I can share the brand if needed.

And the last one, the Primo EM272. This is the real deal. Clean recording, no congestion at all in any frecuency and on top of that picks up some noises that I couldn't hear while I was recording, which is kind of funny.

Note: if your handheld recorder is mono, any mic you plug in while be recorded in mono as well. It would be nice if manufacturers allowed to record stereo through the minijack mic.

Here are 2 pics where you can see the results.

Guessing these are hard wired?

Personally I would lean more towards dual use bluetooth earbud type devices (can use for talking and listening). Have not tested them but they can be had as cheap as 10 bucks a pair and if someone comes out the room you can just act like you lost your earbud by the door or something.

I'm very satisfied about my Clippy mics with the EM272 capsules. If there are EM72 capsules with luetooth it could be a good option to place them in a room where the action is and the recorder in a room nearby.

But with bluetooth you also have the limitations of battery power.

I don't know the name. I've got them as gift with the medium quality caps to give them a test, and they behaved way better. I also searched in the chinese website we all know and doesn't seem to have something even similar in size. If I ever get which brand they are, I will quote your message again to let you know.

Yes, I soldered them to a 3.5 minijack connector to plug them in the handheld recorder. Now I have more handheld recorders, I might do another test to see how the pre-amp handheld recorders behave with each capsule.

Do you have any link of those earbud devices? The idea is cool to have them laying down, and even is someone catch them you already have the file stored in the recorder.

Fully agree. EM272 are great capsules, probably the best out there to record ambient/quiet environments.
For example, I recorded behind a wall from the adjacent room, and It picked way more sounds than the rest of the mics/capsules. This comes to a price, because it also captures your own breathing if you are 1 or 2 meters away inside the room where the capsule is placed.
Anyway, really happy with them!

Here are a few of the cheap bluetooth options. Have not tried to use them exclusively as a microphone but in theory should work.

I misunderstood. I thought you were talking about bluetooth mics that could be use with the handheld recorders.

Those earphones you shared could only be use with phones. Am I right? Is there a way to connect them to handheld recorders with any type of adapter?

I've been doing some research on this. You can use a bluetooth receiver with a minijack conector (broad use in car audio systems), the tricky part is battery life and if earbuds goes into "stand by mode" if nothing is heard for a period of time. I guess there is only one way to figure it out.

On the other hand, I also investigate different apps. Every manufacturer has its own app, and on top of those ones, the creators of Dolby Digital (Dolby Labs) also has one, which based on the comments, outperforms any other app available in the market.

Battery life, 54mAh seems the best at this moment with up to 3h continuous recording (recording time uses way more battery based on the specs, as they assure playing music time is between 6 and 8h).
What might be interesting is to only use one earbud at a time, so you can double the time recording and always have ready a backup when the working one dies. Other idea, is to place them far away from earch other to record different environments. Again, there is only one way...

Will keep you updated if I go through this route.
