Just checking in

Post by mc2003 »

Hi, everyone,

I'm a newcomer, with one or two uploads to contribute. I'm a bit of a techie, and have decent recording equipment but
am looking to improve results with better microphones and techniques. Hopefully I may get some tips/suggestions from the forum!

Great to see a fellow sound geek. Welcome aboard. What kind of gear do you use?

Over the last couple of years I've been experimenting with various bits of domestic gear, that you might take on a trip with you.
The best combination I found so far is an old Sony PC100 video camera as a front end to a Sony walkman mini-disc recorder.
It gives very good gain with not bad recording quality, but of course the older electronics are not brilliant on S-to-N.
I built a custom pre-amp using cascaded OP470 op amps which give excellent gain and pretty good noise figure, with an electret condenser mic insert which is small enough to sit well in a gap under my motel door. It's amazing how much sound can be recorded off the floor. Unfortunately, my job changed, and I haven't had much chance to use it in anger. I got one decent recording which I'll upload - I used Wavelab to post-process it a bit, but I'm hoping to do much better in the future. I'm looking at something like a Sony PCM-D50 next time I'm in the USA, early next year, hopefully. Right now, I can only drool!!
How about yourself?

I'm not nearly as talented building gear, but I love to experiment. My main recorder is a Zoom H2, but I've played with a couple different low end digital voice recorders. I picked up a recorder that's disguised as a USB flash drive, too.

My first toys as a kid were cassette recorders, and my education was in broadcasting and audio production, so I guess I was destined for this kind of hobby.

Looking forward to hearing your posts!
