I have been scratching my head trying to think of a way to make the USB recorders more discrete in case they are found and I have not hit on a whole lot of ideas. If the thing is found, the gig is pretty much up. Not good.
However, I have been looking on line and I see that bluetooth earpieces for cell phones are getting less and less expensive. They are not designed to be as sensitive as the USB mics but you could almost kick one under the door to a room. And if the room was on your floor and you had the balls you could even tell the hotel you lost it. Easy for it to fall out of your pocket on the way back from the pool etc.
These have the advantage of nothing being stored on them and the sound can not be picked up on a FM radio or TV etc. Many notebooks now have built in bluetooth..
Something to consider...
Cheep bluetooth headset instead of a USB recorder?

Re: Cheep bluetooth headset instead of a USB recorder?
This is a bloody good idea. It's worth pointing out that Bluetooth does some mangling of the audio when streamed, and I suspect Android devices would probably have more functionality to record the stream, but I'm pretty sure the audio would be comparable to the cheapo USB recorders.
The downside is that although the cover story is more plausible, the outlay for a decent and small Bluetooth headset is considerably more, and my guess is that most people would pinch that if they found it laying around.
Tough dilemma, but definitely one worth testing and I can see the safety advantage of it.

A very quick casual look at eBay turfed this up:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sport-Bluetooth ... 418294a629
$2.58 buy it now and $1.53 shipping. That's under $5, and that was the first cheep one I saw.

They have some cheap Bluetooth headsets on amazon as well.

I really do think this is a great idea, but there is a flaw. What about the range on such devices? You would have to be within a certain distance for your phone or tablet to be able to receive audio from the Bluetooth.

Re: Cheep bluetooth headset instead of a USB recorder?
My old bluetooth headset was good at work for about 5 offices and around the corner into the break room. It was not as good as a cordless phone that had the entire run of the place, or a cell phone.
BTW, as I also mentioned before, you can go on ebay or craig's list and get droid that has a bad ESN or is just old. You can still set it up with wifi and you can still record with it, and you can lock the internal memory. I am not sure if you can encrypt the SD card for streaming yet. So you could drop a throwaway phone, but I suspect if someone finds it you might never get it back. On the plus side the data on it should be safe.
