I live in a 3-unit building and my bedroom is directly above the bedroom of the unit below me. When I moved in, there was a gorgeous couple, but a real jerk had lived in my unit before, so even though we got along, I think they were gun shy and didn't do anything until I had gone to work or on trips - and back then I didn't know about USB recorders.
Then for a few years, a divorced dad lived there and the only sound was when his kids visited and they played his XBox top volume. So the place has been vacant for a month and I was crossing my fingers that a sweet little couple would find their way into the unit. So last night I'm in the laundry room which faces the carport and the boyfriend introduces himself, and says yeah - it's just me and my girlfriend there
So I introduced myself. Helped them through a problem they were having with their air conditioner (they'll end up having to call the landlord today) and gave them my cell phone number.
I also told them that everyone in the complex is real easy going - no complainers, frustrated homeowners demanding quiet, children etc. And that we all looked out for each other and since all of us party late on one occasion or the other - they could party late and noone's going to complain to police or landlord or bang on the wall/floor to stop.
So we'll see. The bad news is there is no where to decently place a mic to get a great recording; there are close buildings, and they are ground floor, so highly doubt they will be active with their windows open; so anything I catch will be from the floor.
To that end, before I left for work today, I placed one of my USB mics where the noise transmittance from below seems best and when I get home tonight, I'll see if anything comes up on Audacity!
This Saturday I am spending a few shekels downtown LA at same hotel I was in last week. July 4th is like the Valentine's of the summer, and I have asked for a room on the floor at the end where most of the action came from. If all goes well, I'll hopefully be able to get enough recordings without much prowling, but I'm still going to have some walkaround because it's part of the ritual now. It's an amazing feeling when you're walking around, and then pick up a faint sound and then go back and forth until you come up on the door where the source is - that is what happened with Couple #3 from last week. I am staying Saturday and Sunday night, checking out Monday, July 4th.
