Can anyone clean this?

Post by enigma63 »

I've been given the attached file by someone who asked me to clean it up enough so that he can hear what's being said.

In my amateurish way I did manage to loose a lot of the background hum, but not enough for him to make out the words - despite me explaining that he really needed to listen with a decent pair of headphones I think that he was using phone ear buds and given that he's not a natural English speaker I couldn't explain the need well enough.

I've attached the file as he sent it to me, which I think was extracted from a video file so a filtered version will be a lot smaller.

So anyone out there fancy a go at cleaning it up?

For those who like listening her first big orgasm is at 11:35 :)

I gave this a listen. The hum is not hum as much as air noise, perhaps from a heating or air conditioning system or even a fan. It is easy to cut the low end out aggressively at 200Hz (if you really had hum, as in AC hum, 250 is a better option as the hum will be at 60Hz in North America and 250 will really attenuate the root as well as the fist few harmonics). I ran an amplification pass to bring the levels back up to nominal, and I was able to grab a good quiet sample and use that for the noise reduction seed and cranked that up a bit more than usual (18db reduction instead of 15). The results were pretty good as far as getting rid of the background noise. However there are still a lot of standing wave echos that need to be tamed. I don't have the patients to do that on the computer. If you want to try you need a good parametric equalizer plug in. Set the Q fairly high, turn the gain down about 2/3 of the way, and start to move the center frequency until you hit one of them. Than it is just tuning the Q the amount of attenuation, and the center frequency. I don't have a good real time adjustable parametric plug in for Audacity, and even many of the so called real time plug in's have enough lag to make using them for this kind of fine grained tweaking a real pain in the ass.

@reggind Many thanks for the response, and I will now show how amateurish I am at cleaning by saying that I wish that understood much more of what you have taken the time to write

Hi enigma63:

This is an authentic recording I assume? I haven't listened to it but I guess this is your friend recording a video of his wife with her lover while they are going at it? :D

Don´t worry enigma, this was a typical reggind :-) Most of us are way too amateurish for this electronic genius, me included.

Here is a quick once over using Audition and my basic cleanup. I think the hum is from a jet tub plus add the bathroom accoustics and you are getting a lot of reverb. From here it would be going to each section of speaking and cleaning it up. Pretty tedious work :)

Yes, he frequents a cuckold forum, so it's not that he wants evidence of her infidelity (he's sometimes involved...) more that he wants, needs perhaps, to hear what she is saying

I thought as much. As obvious of a suggestion this is, perhaps he needs to be told that he needs a better recorder?

Its not like anyone will catch him

Many thanks for that, I'll pass it back and see if I can get a translation

So this file is already heavily edited. There is literally no frequencies above 1.5kHz. 2kHz - 4kHz is where intelligibility comes from in human speech. It looks like someone tried to do noise reduction and just completely killed it.

Anywhere, here is my effort in cleaning it up.

Great technical info for future reference. Thanks, Joeyboby5.
