New Forum Software

Post by yeppie »

Something is going on right here ...

The Sexssoundlovers Community looks different today - I have just installed a new forum software. Instead of the previous phpbb2 we now have phpbb3 online. As this is not a simple upgrade but a real new software installation, some things need to be adjusted and some functions might not work right from the beginning.

I will set up as much as possible during the next days and ask you to check and report any problems that occur.

When everything seems to be fine, I will finally adjust the template. Until then we will see the phpbb3 standard style.

Why did I do this?

Well basically, as with the Archives, it was time for a change at the Forum.
- The new software has a lot more options.
- Addons (for example the attachment mod) are integrated.
- The administration panel is far better.

But most important, the new installation was the only way to fix all of the bugs that occurred during the last months. Just one example: We should now have bbcode back which didn´t work anymore (bbcode is needed for formating messages).

Let´s get used to the new forum (me too) - I´m pretty sure it will be a major improvement.

Hey yeppie.. congratulations on your new software upgrade! Glad it went fairly smoothly.

Board seems about the same navigation-wise... but I was trying to read the post "About a Dream and How to realize it" (our IT posts) and seems that many of your posts (all of mine appear to be there for some reason)... but all of your posts cut off after the first line or so. No hurry in repairing that... I can read it whenever.. .just wanted to point it out as you may not have been aware of that 'glitch' yet in the new software. Keep up the great work... take a rest for now after installing all this stuff !

Thanks a lot Mark!

I didn´t notice that, arrgh - I have to look through all messages now and paste & copy each of those where the message got cut. Will take a few (?) hours of work.

I´m pretty sure to know where that error ocurred. After the installation of the new software I started an automatic but nevertheless complicated conversion of the old forum´s database to the new one. The conversion script seems to have interpreted my "´" as end of message. So most of my messages (and a number of posts from other members) end with "don" which has been a don´t before.

The Read First Forum has been updated, will go on with that stupid work during the next days.

If you find more errors, please let me know. No, don´t. OK, please do. F**k!

Been working the whole day on copy & paste cut messages from the old forum to the new one and have done about one third of all threads. What I have learned now is to never use " ´ " but " ' " instead if you write words like " I'm " or " don't ". I could kick myself as 95% of the messages containing the bad " ´ " are written by ... yeppie (or quotations of my messages).

I won't stop until evil is beaten!

Hey unknown voter - if you think that the new software is worse than the old one, please explain. You could help me in making things better. Thanks!

Congratulations on the cool new forum, i like the new design alote better then the old one.
i do have two small issus.

1) i can find the upload files anywhere around. did you cancel this function? can we only use the archive now?

2) the logo jpg doesnt appear. im not sure if it is a problem on my side or the server, but it doesnt.

also a small "i wish" kinda thing..
the double click in the archive is anoying IMHO. if it is posible i wish it will be the defualt one click.

ps - what is going on with ulisten? there is nothing new in there for mounths now, why? i do wish to puload all my youtube FLV's there, how do i go about doing that?

Hiya again Yeppie.. sorry to be a pain... but I was playing around on the board and noticed there is no 'PM' button (that I could find.. it may be there and I missed it). Is there a button to check PMs? Thanks again!

Thanks for your feedback Doron. It helps a lot to see what members think of anything new.

There is no change in the attachment policy of this forum. The only thing that changed is that there is no more single page where you find a list of all attachments. I hope this will be only a temporary problem and I will add this functionality as soon as possible. You still find the uploads within the messages they have been attached to. Simple clicking on the file's name will start the transfer.

I have not integrated the logo into the new template because I think about changing the site's look (mainly colours) and the logo will be adjusted to fit that final look.

I'm afraid the double-click in the archives can't be avoided. I'm not too happy with that too but I do not see a way to change that.

This new software is much more difficult for me to navigate without eyesight than the previous version. Sorry, I do not like it, and this may mean the end of my participation in the SSL forum. For instance, the old version had a quick link back to the index page. I cannot find it here. For another thing, I still haven't figured out how to post new topics and then attach files. Too bad, because I have some hot sounds ready for upload. So... I understand why the new software was needed, but I find it far too difficult to use.

One thing that might help is to place the posts in a table, as was the system with PHP2. This would allow me to jump directly to content. Part of my problem with the new setup is that I need to wander through a search box and a bunch of other stuff before finding the posts. Now, I am going to try and post a topic with attachments to see if it is possible for me. We shall see!

Hey El Ciego

Now this is a problem. I still do not understand all problems you encountered but in general I got it. I checked the support forums for phpbb but did not find too much information. A new thread has been started, maybe there will be help from other phpbb users. So far I have only seen the message that the new script is said to be better but not perfect for the visible handicapped members. Your complaint seems to prove this wrong.

First thing I will do in a moment is to install another template called subsilver2 which is based on the old one. My hopes are that this works better for you. You can set this as your default template in your personal settings. If you need assistance with this, please let me know. I should be able to change the settings in the backend too.

The quick link to the index page is still available. On the old system, it was placed above and below the messages. Now we have a quick navigation above the messages, right below the logo / title and a quick link to one level up below the messages.

Any hints on how to improve?

Yeppie, Thanks for your efforts . Actually, I am starting to become accustomed to this new layout, although I do not like it very much.

In the old system, I could simply jump to the posts by jumping to a new "table" or "heading." The new template seems to lack this function. No big deal, really. I think it is more important to get Again, danke schoen. the List of Uploads and other features to work. I know of only three members of yeppie.org/ssl-forum who are blind, including myself.
