Some things I can add -
1) Walk! Walk! Walk! Have wasted a lot of $$$ hoping couples would be next to me, but even in great hotels on great nights the odds are heavily stacked against you. Nice when it happens as you can have your own experience while listening to theirs, but with all the recordings I have submitted over the past year, there were only two from couples having sex next door to me.
2) Second Physicist's tip to stop and listen carefully. I usually walk past several rooms and stop for several seconds.
3) Learned this in my 'Beautiful Sunday' recordings - you're hearing something great; recorder/phone is soaking it in, and you hear the elevator doors open - believe it or not, this is a GOOD thing. First, while you are alone, you not only have your main device active, but another hidden/taped nearby. This is a must for catching further sessions including morning wake-up sex! Also, when the doors open you will scoop your phone up (even if you use a better recorder, having your phone with you for this is a MUST) walk-jog quietly away from the event to separate yourself from the event. Then when security/guest walk past you are just a normal guy in a hall either texting or talking on his phone - even holding it up to your ear and going uh-huh, yeah, ok.." is effective. Best part is if it's a couple - you can track them to where they are going and you have another target. I was able to hit 3 couples on the same floor this way and you avoid the creep vibe if you are not standing anywhere near where the action is going on.
When the crisis is over, you can return if things are still active and continue. In the meantime, the hidden device is recording seamlessly.
4) Do not Disturbs are generally useless. Could be an angry old person trying to get sleep. That said, if you are in a smaller place or place with smaller floors - your brain will be able to remember to a certain degree if there are changes.. such as walking past an area at 3AM and seeing a DnD sign you were sure wasn't there at midnight. Add some giggly conversation and you are on a home run.
5) TV - Unless they have on porno or satellited into a romance music station, it's also not reliable. To me the key predictor is being able to tell if there is a young couple inside by the chatter. Also if you are lucky, ride the lift with a nice couple to their floor and when getting off, either walk in their same direction but ahead of them and if you reach the end of the corridor - look at your key card angrily confused and backtrack. Or.. walk the opposite direction very slowly. When you hear the door close, backtrack until you hear their voices behind a door - it's human nature to chat a bit first. Again, this is no guarantee. been burned by tracking couples I thought were sure things - but turned out completely dead for the evening.
6) During nights where you are aggressively hunting, take naps when you need (set your alarm so you don't wake up the next AM!). If you are exhausted, you will make stupid mistakes or get either too careless or too paranoid..

) , or tents which are lightened still. I used to use my telephone (indeed on airplane mode and silence mode!). But lately I bought a USB stick wich also has a recording option (cost me only 16 bucks). It's always risky to put/leave your telephone close to the "crimescene" . When some one finds it, your teelphone is lost and it might be easy to find your identity with the content of the telephone. DE USB stick is very small, even when you have to leave it on the spot, anyone will hardly find it. And when they find, there's no way they can link to your identity. And you can only loss 16 bucks;-) The recording quality is OK in my opinion. I think the spot where you can record (close!), is more important than the device. I will post an example for you in the outdoor section (German couple in a tent)
