Need help recovering files

So I deleted some files awhile back and using a hard drive scanner, I recovered some. But I can't play them due to a codec error. I believe because they are large files, they were compressed and the media players can't decompress them. I tried looking on youtube for answers and downloading software that contain plug ins but still nothing. Anyone willing to try and fix these for me?
