For the high resolution version, I had my Sony ICD-UX570 that I carry and used when standing in the place in the hall where the sounds were clearest.
In most parts of the USA, it's illegal to put anything under the door or otherwise violate a room's expectation of privacy, so captures have to be from general or public areas.
Some hotels have rules on top of that, where you can record anything in your room, but not in the corridors unless you get advance permission..
