Those of you who collect sounds... where do you do it? How?
I am cursed with quiet neighbors... wasn't sure if anyone had any special techniques or places *other* than recording your self or your neighbors...

we used to live in a block of flats and the neighbours used to have sex quite often. They were really noisy, all you had to do was to press your ear to the wall and enjoy it. My wife complained about them once, but I really liked it.
Now we have moved and the people around are so damn silent... I hate the new place.

Hi Coyote - a few thoughts (hope the old hands don't mind my repeating myself on this).
It depends on what you are going after, how much you wish to invest in equipment and how time you can spend and how much risk you find acceptable (usually a combination of the likelihood of discovery and the cost of discovery).
You can go farther afield making neighbor recordings - having a cardioid or supercardioid microphone (shotgun mic's, parabolic mic's) can allow you to record neighbors at a distance. Temperate weather, open windows and an out of the way location from which to record all contribute to getting a good recording. Getting to know your subjects/targets helps as well... I've a neighbor that spent four weeks out of town on a construction project this summer - the couple are in the mid 20's - no kids... I imagine it was an energetic homecoming that evening. Unfortunately, thunderstorms and monsoon rains preventing an attempt at recording.
You have more targets in an apartment complex but need to be careful about creating suspicions walking around the parking lot with a 24" boom microphone
I've had one sucess with a neighbor recording. I've tried several other times but never came home with anything usable.
Motel recordings - had an experience several years ago with a loud couple next door. Beat the heck out of the movie on Skinamax... I've had some success recording couples from the hallway or corridor outside their room.
I like the target density - a decent sized hotel, on a weekend, might have 50% plus occupancy rate (higher in some cases). That might give you 125 rooms to start, discounting families, "party" rooms, etc you still have a decent number of room where people are having sex.
Timing is the key - knowing a couple are in the room is one thing, catching them going at it (with out getting caught yourself) it a wee bit tougher. "Do Not Disturb Signs" are pretty nice... you know the room is probably occupied and that the occupants are not as likely to come bursting out of the room.
I use a small amplifier (sonic ear, bionic ear, etc) to determine if a room is occupied and if so - if there is any activity of interest occuring... you can bend down and fix your shoelace, place the amplifier at the base of the door and get a clearer idea of what going on the other side. There have been several times when none of that was required - one gal I could hear half way down the hall.
Recording - I use a digital voice recorder and a small omni-directional or cardioid microphone that will fit under the door. Usally I'll adjust this so that it isn't obtrusive or obvious to anyone in the room. I then cover the microphone and recorder with a newspaper or magazine. I can then loiter less conspicously or attempt to find other recording subjects.
Pro's: I have gotten as many as three or four recording in an extended evening - depending on the hotel and it's customers (10 pm local time to about 1 or 2 am work for me) your best recording times will vary.
Variety - you get a wide mix of folks on the other side of the door... I've two recordings of threesomes (mmf and ffm) that I've posted. I've two recordings of two couples in the room having sex (not yet posted). I found one master/slave couple.
Risk - I've not had anyone affiliated with the hotel challenge me or question my actitities -- I'm not hanging around the hallways in a trenchcoat either. Placing the recording rig and not directly monitoring the couple (ie - dropping to the next floor to try and catch another couple), runs the risk of having your equipment discovered and taken (especially by the subjects ... Yeppie or someone else on the board had pointed this out to me earlier this year and unfortunately it did happen... I only had $ 50.00 invested in the equipment so I don't feel so bad about that - losing two great recording I'd made that evening still bums me out.
Cons - Hotel hallways can echo and amplify sound of other folks down the hall. Radios and Televisions - some couples just don't want to share their joy... they'll crank up the background noise. Spending some time with your sound editing software can salvage some recordings.
I'm sure other folks have additional insights, techniques and tips.

Unfortunately... being in California... most of the hotels here are outside-only access (meaning the doors to the rooms are accessable from a walkway along the outside of the hotel vs. interior doors in the hotel). This adds excessive background noise to recordings..... couple with that most american hotels are located along busy freeways.... usually causes recordings to be background-noise intensive.
I did go through a stint where i was "homeless' and living out of a hotel for a 2-3 month period... which was definately interesting. One day I was awoken to the sound of a woman screaming and went to the wall for a listen.... made out parts of a conversation that sounded like they were making some sort of adult video there..ha. Another time... thought I could make out the sounds of a male and at least 2 other females.... but from the imperssion I got.. he was either very cocky or had paid for the women.. since he was very adamant about getting 'his way' with the women... who seemed very reluctant due to his size.... this was one of my 'recordings that got away'... unfortunately.. the sounds came in spats and were not very clear through the walls... and due to the outside noise... I could not pinpoint the room they were in at all.
Guess those are the reasons I have given up the hotel 'voyeur' activities and stuck to my own recordings. I would sooo like to catch my elusive 'huge cock' recording ... but just dont have the right environment to be able to get a decent recording from it (aside from planting a mic actually inside the room.. which is very risky since I would have to run cables through the wall to the outside, etc... and really dont want to risk going to jail over it).

having some kind of hotel manager in this group would be great!
Exclamation i was thinking of buying a hotel lately. would install a baby monitoring system in all of the rooms which has a central on/off switch in some sort of control room. this could be a great service for guests, don´t you think so?

Back to the topic of recording other than self and neighbours: I used to live in a smallish college town, and there were a number of open apartment buildings I'd haunt in the wee hours of the morning. Being there was great; they were students for the most part, so: their apartments were small; the places had to be cheap, so the buildings they were in were old; they went out every weekend and were home tanked (and rarely alone) by 2 in the morning; they fucked alot and tried to be like pornstars...cuz they were dumb coeds! A golden opportunity, and one I took advantage of often (though I've since lost all those tapes 
). I'd show up around 3, and everybody was in motion that was going to be!
So, if you're in a smaller town, try old, insecure apartment buildings! In a city, I wouldn't try anything outside some safety zone!

This may sound obvious, but the best places to hunt for sex sounds is where people are having sex.
Many countries have legal prostitution. While bugging bedrooms in a brothel could get one castrated or worse, there are numerous other opportunities for voyeuristic recording.
One massage parlor I visited had windows facing the street. I was able to discreetly plant a mic on an outside window ledge and stood there quietly for an hour until I got the recording.
Other options include the "no-tell motels" common in many larger cities. These "love motels" do not always have good soundproofing between rooms. In my original hometown of Minneapolis, Minnesota there used to be a motel, the Aqua City Motel, which had walls which seemed to be made of pressboard (Masonite) between the rooms. I wish I had recording gear back then.
If you're really serious, you can bribe a hotel maid to allow you to plant bugs/microphones in a hotel room where you know a young couple is staying. While Bride and Groom are down in the hotel restaurant having lunch, you could bribe the maid to allow you to share their joy. Best case scenario: The maid is hot and into listening to sex sounds. Not only does she allow you to plant the mics, but she joins you later for drinks and to listen to your recordings. She has sex with you because she's so turned on.
Worst case scenario: The maid freaks out, calls both the management and the police, and you are forced to make a very hasty retreat. LOL

I think we did discuss the brothel locations too (offline, thats why you dont see it here in the post). The conclusion was we wanted more 'authentic' sounds, so we were thinking more along the lines of a motel 6/super 8 type of thing I think.
