Server hardware failure

Post by yeppie »

Dear friends,

just when I was updating the archive on thursday afternoon, the server suddenly wasn´t responding anymore. I contacted the hardware provider almost immediately and after a few hours they told me that the "server is having some severe hardware issues and therefore it needs to be replaced".
It took almost 2 days until the hard disks were built into a new chassis and the new server was configured ... a really fast service level is out of my financial possibilities and of course this had to be done during the weekend. Along with the new server came a new ip adress which needed to be pointed to the domain before it could be spread between nameservers on the web (very technical, I know).

What I want to tell you is: please excuse the long downtime, but now we seem to be back again!

Well hardware does give up the ghost. Every connection on a network must have a unique IP address or it gets upset and throws its toys out of the pram. name servers just keep a list of ip addresses and the user friendly domain names 'We' know them by in order to pass requests to the right server on the network.

All fine now though ;-)

As usual, many thanks again for your efforts, yeppie, for resolving the issue...! I thought already we have been hacked again by some chinese computer nerds :-)

"Well hardware does give up the ghost." <- lol, nice translation of the german saying... :-D

At least it's just been the hardware. I was already thinking there would be other reasons. Glad that's not the case.

Thank you for your continues hard and diligent work. It would be easy to just say "fuck it" when a disaster like that strikes. I am very happy that you stuck it out.

yes well done and great effort yeppie, thank you. I was also thinking of other reasons why it might be down.

I wonder if it worth having an emergency server and/or link/alternative address as a contingency? there's probably a cost but is it something worth exploring in principle? like a kind of secondary meeting place that kicks in after say a week of this server being down.

alternatively just an emergency site so we can communicate like this - it wouldn't need to keep files, but we could stay in contact if alternative arrangements needed to be put in place and then we would know once such things were put back in place.

what do people think?

Good idea, Jeremy. I kept the domain yeppie.org, the former home of the community, for exactly this purpose. But you reminded me that it would be of no use if nobody knew about it ;-)
We also have sexsoundlovers.com and .org but they reside on the same server so they won´t be of any help in case of a server crash. Anyway, be assured that I will do a lot of work to keep the community alive ... you are worth it.
