microphone via wifi

Post by 7inch »

I'm looking for a very small microphone that is accessible via wifi.
Similar to a webcam, but only sound.
Someone knows something like that ?

I m not aware one exists on the market and if it does, it probably is very expensive!

I think we will have a few of these in a year or so.

I'm guessing it would be no good, but have you thought of buying a small transmitter/receiver set up? I purchased one myself many years ago and it was quite small. Not sure where it is now, as I never used it.

Raspberry Pi Zero W + USB sound card and mic. Beware that the ground connection on USB floats so you will have to connect the USB housing to a real ground connection.

That would be a workable solution but it will be big and not discreet, not to mention on the pricy side. You would do better with an old android smart phone. All the vital pieces are there, and more, you can get old smart phones for under $20 on eBay (or new low end smartphones from WalMart on line..). And if it is found they probably won't call out the bomb squad.

You can camouflage the Raspberry in an old box of a WiFi-Repeater or something.
But I dont have knowledge for programming the Raspberry enough. How can I get remote access to the micro over the internet ?

Same problem with an old smartphone. How can I get remote access to it ?

I am sorry, but I am not sure a WiFi-Repeater or something would not look out of place. But as I said, the solution is sound. You need to learn some Linux. There are a lot of ways to skin that cat. The most conventional being to run some kind of an audio streaming program on the phone. But if you want to be really ultra simple, there are a lot of apps that will turn an old smartphone into a wireless security cam with audio and video. You could run one of them and just use the audio. Lock the screen and you are good to go.

one option is a baby monitor. another is a hidden mini camera/phone charger unit for home surveillance... if this little unit could be plugged into a powerbar behind some furniture in a room it could serve as a wifi mic

you can buy powersockets (both the ones that are installed into the wall as well as a cube/extension) that you put a sim in. You then call the phonenumber of the sim card and listen live to the sound in the room..

My sister has a 1 bed flat in central Amsterdam and often rents it out for a week on airbnb to couples. Wish I had a unit in that bedroom then

Sorry, but I dont understand what you mean. Do you mean a (very small) phone in a powersocket or a powersocket with a SIM-slot and a microphone in it ?

There was a hit on something like this over on hack a day a little while ago. Using an esp8266 micro/wifi module and an outboard ADC. The esp8266 has an ADC on it, but it is way too slow. I am dubious as to how well this will work with no signal conditioning in front of the ADC but if you are into hardware hacking it would be interesting to try..

Have you thought about going down the Bluetooth route with this? I have some Bluetooth mic/headphones that I use for Skype calls while moving around the house and they work very well. I just did a little experiment of recording sounds from the next room using these with Audacity, it worked pretty good.

I've also seen Bluetooth baby monitors on Amazon though I've never tried using them.

I suggested using bluetooth a long time ago. I saw the plus as if the device got picked up, you could go to the desk and ask if anybody found one. It fell out of my pocket/ear etc and I did not notice it. I think the shortcoming with bluetooth is it is limited to a probably about a 3 ro 4 room sphere around where the transmitter is. Wifi with a bit of info should be able to broadcast to anywhere on the net.
