I visited the site this morning for the first time in ages and found this thread. It's kind'a touching.

My life has taken quite a turn over the last year, with the consequence that I don't have access to the situations I used to. I've moved to a new job in a new town and am not doing as much travelling as I used to. The job is also very consuming, I absolutely love what I do and I put in long hours - pretty much seven days per week, which leaves me little time for my "hobby."

I will get back on the road at some point and I will start posting again. In the meantime, thanks for thinking of me, it's nice to know my work has been appreciated.

Was it posted in public or as a private message? I've found some helpful advice before in this forum, but I don't remember if they were posted by LeStanf or someone else. I'd like to read if you can share a link or repeat the advice. Although I think I'm somewhat good at staying unnoticed, I have been confronted a few times and would be happy for any advice that minimises the risk.

I offer all my sympathy and support for what has happened to you and I echo the comments of others here that you should take some time out to rethink what this whole thing is about. Losing seven USBs in the same hotel within a month should have been a warning, eventually they were bound to correlate their finds with the hotel records of who was staying there.

Personally I am uber, uber cautious. I don't wander through corridors in the middle of the night, I rarely stay in the same hotel twice, I switch hotel chains all the time and if I lose a USB I don't return to that hotel for at least a year unless it's absolutely essential. I often miss out on potential recordings because I don't feel it's safe or wise to leave a USB in a particular spot. You need to think about these things yourself, personal safety must always take priority over getting one more recording.

At the end of the day though no real harm has come to you from this besides a little embarrassment. But it should act as a wake up call. My suggestion is to lie low for a while, take stock of your thoughts and ask yourself why you do this. Do you actually appreciate the recordings you're making or is this just a need to be the number one contributor to this site (which you most surely have been)? If you do really appreciate the recordings then perhaps you can change your modus operandi with the aim of improving the quality of each recording you make.

Personally I feel this is about understanding how couples engage with each other, and how this changes with age and experience. I believe the quality of my own recordings is enhanced if I have actually seen the couples involved, which is why I take time to watch people arriving at the hotel. I have developed a method of planting USBs that only takes a couple of seconds and as I say, if the device is discovered I never return. And yes, there is a frisson of risk and a sense that I am dong something illicit which adds a little excitement to the whole affair. As a result of my approach though it is extremely rare for me to get more than one recording from a night's stay, and most of the time I don't even get that much.

So please take it easy for a time and consider if and how you want to continue with our hobby. Remember that there are people in this community who love and support you, particularly within our inner circle. We won't feel any the less of you if you decide to give this up altogether. But however you chose to handle this, please stay in touch, we're always here for you old buddy.

In the aftermath, I took most of L's advice except I still walk the corridors. First, to me there's nothing like hearing these sounds in real life; second, I can then get a much higher quality recording with my handheld as opposed to the USB's.
Long run, it was a positive thing even with the drop in frequency and quantity.
Even though the sounds are basically the same, there are always differences. And I find the almost Parisian horniness of young couples in San Francisco gives a level of intensity, and with much better door gaps.
Then there was the hushed shyness of a late teens couple staying at a suburban major chain.
And ones I caught at boutiques in Hollywood and Beverly Hills are still unique - and I know much of this is subjective because of the variety of memories and state of mind I was in during the recordings.
Either way, I have a better experience now as opposed to the very expensive rut I was in with the one single downtown LA hotel.

Many thanks! I haven't heard about your incident. It sounds like someone figured out that you were the one planting those USBs, but luckily without serious consequences?

For me too, the best part is to actually hear the couples, but recording adds to the thrill and it's great to be able to relive these moments.

I'm not quite as cautious as LeStanf either in all regards. I have a few favourite hotels that I keep going back to whenever I have the opportunity, but maybe a good thing then, it isn't that often. I've also considered the possibility that the hotel records could be used against me in the case of the Middle Eastern couple that I've recorded several times, but I assume they do frequent visits so I doubt they would remember the exact dates of those particular sessions, if they against all odds have heard the recordings.

I don't plant recorders in corridors unless the risk is close to zero, which means not very often, but by doing so I've never lost a single recorder. When I do hide one, it's not for more than a few hours. I fear the worst, that someone found it, then put it back as a trap and is just waiting for me to retrieve it.

I'm much less worried about walking around hotels during nighttime, even if there are peek holes or cameras (unless of course it's obvious that someone is watching, like monitors by the reception desk). Maybe I'm overconfident, but I can always tape the recorder under a bag or something. I have some tricks so that it stays out of sight. If there's a camera or if someone manages to sneak up on me, my behaviour will of course seem strange or suspicious, but what then? If they also heard the sex sounds, a confrontation would probably be embarrassing at worst. I'm not doing anything illegal after all.

I have been approached a number of times, meaning they asked me questions, but they never knew what I was doing or that I had a recorder, so I could stay cool. Usually some question like if I had locked myself out from my room or if I was looking for something. There have been times where I've taken unnecessary risks or made stupid mistakes. One time I could tell (for reasons I won't disclose) that a guy had figured out I was listening at the doors, but he didn't confront me, though later I was so worried that I was prepared to flush my expensive recorder in the toilet if someone were to knock on my door. I will never go back to that place, that's for sure.

Here are some things I've learned the hard way:
- If someone appears to take interest in you for whatever reason, stay away from the corridors for the rest of your stay. For example, if someone is giving you looks, you may get away with it once, but if they see you again later they may start asking questions.
- In one hotel there were stone tiled floors, so I removed my shoes to be able to walk silently. Some guy saw me and I slowly walked the other away, but he went after and questioned me about it. So, avoid doing things that look out of ordinary.
- Don't walk up to a door too quickly after a couple has entered, especially if they had just seen you walking in another direction.
- Airport hotels are best avoided, because the risk of someone suddenly opening their door during late hours is high. For the same reason, I'm cautious of smokers and people who brings a dog.

That's what I could remember at the moment. I've also thought about sharing photos here, but that also means a risk that I think is higher than sharing sounds. This is a small community, but I've learned in other contexts that the world is sometimes much smaller than you expect. To stay safe I would also never reveal the name of a hotel where I've been or its specific location.
