As there are different file types, you will need to have a few players installed. Of course there are lots of players for all kind of file types on the market, but I will only name the "standard" players. If you are a pro, you will know many more good software, but this is written to keep it simple for those who need basic help. All players are downloadable for free.

A couple years ago, someone in the Yahoo SSL group turned me on to a free program by the Cowon company that has become my favorite audio and video player. It is available at http://www.cowonamerica.com/download/. It plays virtually all popular formats, and has many codecs that do not come standard with the big three players. It has opened many files in RealPlayer formats that real player refuses to open, so I recommend it highly. I am still using the old version of it. The new one is called jetAudio 6.2.4 Basic and should be a "must have" freeware.
